Many people are wondering how this simple lure can catch so many fish. Its action seems sloppy and most fishermen can cast the Kastmaster over 100 ft regardless of the weather conditions. It can be fished from shore, the boat and even jigged during ice fishing season. The Kastmaster is clearly engineered to catch trout in the hands of any fishermen and I am going to teach you how.
The easiest way to fish this lure is from shore. It can easily be cast out 100+ feet and ignores wind, rain, and other types of weather that cause most lures to fall short of the intended target. When retrieving the lure fishermen typically use one speed, slow, medium or fast. They can catch a few fish but this is the wrong way to reel in a Kastmaster because the Kastmaster is designed to look like a sick and flailing fish to trout. This means that the proper way to fish the lure is to jerk retrieve it. The process means to retrieve it slowly and every few second jerk your rod back and retrieve the slack. This makes the lure quickly flutter up then flutter back down. Most of your hits will come when the lure is fluttering back down because it looks the most vulnerable to fish at this point.
From a boat the process is about the same. Trolling with this lure can work at slow speeds and with the same jerking technique as above. If the boat is going too fast the lure loses its valuable action and you might as well be fishing with a quarter. This lure is great to just cat out towards shore and back to the boat. Try to cast it towards weed beds and rock formations.
I have started using this lure for ice fishing as well. It works so good that all I use during the winter is a Kastmaster with some bait. Jig the lure about 3 feet from the bottom of the lake and have it tipped with some bait. I usually walk away with 10+ fish a day using this technique. It works perfectly for jigging because the action of the lure continually looks like a distressed fish that is easy prey.
I hope this tutorial on the Kastmaster helps you realize what you’ve been doing wrong and why you haven’t been catching many fish with the lure. It is popular for a reason and people are not quick to give up their secrets on how they can catch their limit using the lure. Happy fishing.
