Is there a terrible smell in your trunk that you just can’t seem to get rid of? Trunks can hold onto smells for a long time because they just do not get enough air flow. The best thing to do is pull out the items that contain the foul odor, freshen the trunk and clean the carpet.
Remove The Foul Odor
Remove everything from your trunk. Smell each thing that you pull out of the trunk. If it smells bad do not put it back in your trunk until you have removed the odor from the item.
Also remove the carpeting if it is meant to be removed. Check to see how it is attached or whether or not it is attached. Normally you can pull the carpet out and put it back in easily. This will help you to get the bad smell out of your trunk.
Freshen The Trunk
Sprinkle baking soda throughout the trunk. Close the trunk and allow the baking soda to soak up the odors over night. If you were unable to remove the carpet you can still use this baking soda technique. Use plenty of baking soda to absorb all of the foul smells in your trunk. Hopefully it will actually remove the smell and not just cover up the bad smell in your trunk.
The next day you can vacuum up all of the baking soda.
Use a cleaner, either Windex, Pine Sol or a cleaner of your choice to wipe down the entire interior of your trunk. Windex works well because you can just spray it on and wipe it around with a clean towel. If you use Pine Sol, you should mix it with hot water before using it to clean the trunk.
Clean The Carpet
If you have a home carpet cleaning machine, you may want to use it on your trunk carpets. If not, you can wash them in your washing machine, if the label says that it is safe to do so.
Another alternative is to cover the carpet in baking soda, let it absorb the smells and then *pour household 3% hydrogen peroxide on it if your carpet can handle hydrogen peroxide without staining. After it dries, vacuum up the mixture.
*Test the colorfastness of your carpet by pouring a small amount of household 3% hydrogen peroxide on a corner to see if it changes color.
After you have cleaned the carpets and the trunk, place the carpeting back into the trunk. Your trunk should be as good as new and smell as fresh as a breeze. To avoid smells in your trunk in the future, remove smelly items quickly. You will be so happy once you get the terrible smell out of your trunk.
