Fruit flies are a pain. They buzz around the kitchen, they land on your food, and they just provide a general nuisance. My family has a simple and easy way to effectively get rid of fruit flies that I’d like to share with you. To do this, you’ll need a couple of little glass or plastic containers with open tops that are say, 1 and a half to 3 inches wide. You’ll also need apple cider vinegar, plastic wrap, and toothpicks.
Apple cider vinegar is the crucial and original element to this method, due to the fact that it is sweet (therefore attracting the fruit flies) and much cheaper than balsamic vinegar. This is why you should make the effort to head to your local grocery store and pick some up, it is quite useful.
To start, get your small containers and fill them up with apple cider vinegar. Not to the top, you want to leave a little clearance so the flies can’t get out. Leave about 1/4th of an inch of space between the top of the vinegar and the top of the container. Once this is done, cover the top of the container with plastic wrap and poke a decent amount of holes in the top of it with toothpicks. Place these containers near where the fruit flies congregate and wait.
After a few days, check the traps. The vinegar’s surface should be covered in dead flies. To dispose of them, remove and throw away the plastic wrap, then dump the vinegar and flies down the drain of your sink. Rinse the sink with water to get rid of any straggling traces of vinegar or flies.
Hopefully this method will serve to keep your kitchen fly-free and sanitary. Good luck exterminating those annoying pests!
