With autumn almost upon us, most women are looking at their wardrobes to determine what they need versus what we can afford. That’s because, in today’s economy, most of us can’t afford to spend a lot of money on frivolous fashion. Instead, we need to choose basic pieces that we can adapt to fit today’s hottest trends.
The first step in that process is checking to see what pieces you already have with which you can work. Hopefully, that will include key pieces like
A crisp white cotton shirt (preferably longer in length);
A pair of jeans (the closer to the body, the better);
Leggings (preferably black or a neutral color);
A jacket (preferably black or camel in a blazer or military inspired look);
A little black dress (preferably a simple sheath);
A belt (gold tone chain or neutral leather);
Handbag (preferably a hobo style) and
Jewelry (especially bold, gold colored necklaces, hoop earrings and bangles).
Those pieces provide a good basic set up for your fall wardrobe. However, there may be a few more pieces you will want to add as you can afford it. These would include:
A tunic top (preferably a solid color or animal print);
An oversized cardigan (in a neutral color like camel);
Opaque tights (preferably black);
Boots (the higher, the better);
Shooties (boot heels) and
A colorful scarf or tie.
Additional pieces that would be nice to have if you can afford them include:
Jeggings (jean leggings);
A men’s wear inspired vest and
A hat (preferably fedora or slouch style).
Think carefully about color as well as patterns when choosing your new pieces. Fall 2010 is all about black, camel, chocolate brown, gold, green, purple, red and animal print. If you can only choose one animal print, leopard is THE choice to make. When it comes to color, you must have black, camel and red in your fall wardrobe, but how you use those colors is completely up to you.
Style trends to consider include romantic ruffles, longer tunics, simple dresses, and military inspired jackets. While you may not be able to add all of those trends to your wardrobe, choose one or two and run with the idea.
With these key pieces in place, there are dozens of things you can pair together in new and unique ways. Here are 10 possible looks:
Look #1. Pair leggings or jeggings with a white shirt. Pop on a bold gold necklace, a pair of hugger hoops and some boots and you are ready for almost anything.
Look #2. Throw a military inspired jacket over a simple black dress to add a little bit of edge. Finish off the look with opaque black tights, shooties and some gold chains around the neck.
Look #3. Mix hard (men’s wear inspired) and soft (feminine) looks together. Throw on a pair of jeans, a cute tunic top, a men’s wear inspired vest and a blazer. Polish off the look with over the knee boots, a fedora, a tie or colorful scarf, a hobo bag and some gold bangles.
Look #4. Go chic with a simple little black dress, black opaque tights and shooties. Polish the look with just the right golden accessories.
Look #5. Pair black leggings with a long black tunic top. Add a pop of color with red boots or shooties, a red scarf or handbag. Finish the look with bold gold hoops and lots of bangles.
Look #6. Wear your jeggings with nothing but a men’s wear inspired vest and jacket. Soften the look by adding in a romantic ruffled scarf or a ruffled handbag and delicate jewelry.
Look #7. Pop a colorful tunic over a black sheath dress to create a completely different dress look. Add some thigh high boots with a matching hobo. Finish the look with a bold gold necklace and hoop earrings.
Look #8. For a daytime work look, add a men’s wear inspired jacket over a black sheath dress. Push the sleeves up to the elbows and finish the look with gold bangles and hoops.
Look #9. Wear a long tunic top over nothing but opaque tights for a sexy vixen look. Add thigh high boots and lots of jewelry.
Look #10. Wear a white cotton shirt like a jacket over a black sheath dress. Belt it in at the waist; add some long gold chains, bangles and hoops. Finish the look with a matching bag and shooties.
Even with just a few key pieces, it is possible to be ready for work, play and everything in between. All it takes is a bit of imagination.
