There are many homeschoolers who like the idea of using videos in order for their children to learn. Some use videos in addition to the lesson plan that they are already using. Regardless of your reasons for using the videos you have probably found it very difficult to get kids to actively listen to the videos. Usually after just a few minutes many children will begin to let their minds wonder onto something else, and they end up losing their focus on what they should be doing. Below you will find some ideas on what may help when it comes to actively listening during video time.
Taking notes is actually a very effective way to get children to remember the video that they have just seen. Give your child a small notepad, and have them jot down any interesting points that they see. For younger kids you can have them focus on drawing pictures of the scenes that they like from the video. Note taking skills are very important to learn, and will help children to really focus on the information being presented in the video.
Remove any possible distractions
Allowing the kids to watch the video in their playroom may not be a good idea. They can easily be distracted by their toys, or other items in the room. Before you even start the video make sure that all of the toys are put away, and out of sight. Instead of trying to get some extra housework done, it may be a good idea to take a little break during this time. Watching the video with your children, and pointing out any interesting parts can really help them to stay focused.
Pause the video to recap
Some think that pausing the video will make it more difficult to remember but this is just not the case. Pausing the video maybe halfway through, and going over the information that was just covered, is a really great way to help the information to stick in your child’s mind. This would also be a good time to check, and see if they are taking good notes, and allow them to catch up in their notes if they have fallen behind.
Take Breaks for long videos
If the video is really long it is often a good idea to take plenty breaks. This is especially important for young children. Sitting for along period of time and watching a video can be very difficult. Allow them a brief opportunity to take a break, perhaps giving a snack. This will help them to stay focused for the remainder of the video.
