Self-esteem is the foundation of self-value and is a critical part of our lives. Nathaniel Branden is an author, psychotherapist and a pioneer in the self-esteem field. He states, “No other judgements that we make in life are more important than those we make about ourselves; as judgement reaches the centre of our whole existence.” An individual’s views of themselves has an effect on areas such as success, relationships, academic decisions and career choices.
There are many ways you can learn how to increase self-esteem and the first step is to be honest with yourself. If you want to overcome low self-esteem the first step is to be honest about who you are. By looking at yourself as someone who is deserving and worthwhile then see if your life reflects this. You also need to ask yourself if you are living life with love, good health and peace. Take a look at your support system and look at whether it was supportive or even critical when you were a child. Consider the types of relationships you have in your life, do they bring you energy and are they destructive or supportive? Also ask yourself questions such as do you feel enthusiastic about life and are you pleased with what you have achieved in life so far?
Next you should take a closer look at the areas in your life that are both diminishing and helping your self-esteem, as these have an impact on how you view yourself and live your life. Also examine your childhood years and look for areas that were negative that you need to clear from your mind.
You should then take action to step away from situations that can often contribute to feelings of low self-esteem. You may discover that certain situations and even people have an impact on your self-worth and overall happiness; therefore you may need to alter the way you deal with this and even distance yourself from certain people.
If you feel you need extra support and advice, you should see a counsellor as it is a great way to clear old ways of thinking and determine new positive ways of how to increase self-esteem.
When searching how to increase self-esteem you should alter your attitude with affirmations about yourself. For instance, you should say things daily to yourself like, “I am a valuable person despite any negative associations with my childhood” and ” I can now choose my value as some adults in my life don’t know everything.”
