My five brothers and sisters and I honed our snooping around wrapped Christmas gifts skill to a real art form. We could open Christmas gifts sitting under the Christmas tree that bore our names long before December 25th without getting caught. Or so we thought.
Getting Caught Snooping
Perhaps it was the torn name tags. Or the ribbon that hung loosely around the package, instead of in straight, tight lines. Or the bows that no longer stuck to the wrapping paper. We weren’t sure how it happened. When I was about twelve (the oldest of the snoopers) Mom somehow figured out we kids were big time snoopers, that no surprises gifts sat under our family Christmas tree.
Mom’s Christmas Code Solution
The next year Mom’s solution to end Christmas gift snooping shocked us all. Yes, packages wrapped in Christmas paper with bows and ribbon still sat under the family Christmas tree way before December 25. And yes, each gift had a name tag taped to it. But the name on the name tag wasn’t any of our names. In fact, no names were on the name tags. Instead, Mom had written numbers on the names tags. Numbers from 1 to 8, for the eight people in our family.
“What’s with the numbers, Mom? We don’t know which presents are ours now.”
Mom gloated for a moment, a “winner takes all” smirk on her face. “I suspected some gift snooping before Christmas last year,” she said. “To keep that from happening this year, I’ve devised a number code for gift name tags. Not until Christmas morning will you know which number is yours. And for your information, the codes are not in numerical order.”
Taking the Fun Out of Snooping
Mom had done it. She’d taken all the fun out of snooping. I know this from personal experience, as I still opened up a couple of gifts. Somehow discovering a toy truck for one of my brothers or girls’ clothes too small for me wasn’t that exciting. I gave up snooping that Christmas. I even learned to enjoy having Christmas morning gift surprises.
Got trouble with people in your family snooping around Christmas gifts under the tree? Devise a name tag code. It will completely take the joy out of snooping. So why not give it a try?
