There were many stressful moments when raising my two daughters, but some of the most stressful times were trying to keep my children busy at the doctor’s office so that they would not make too noise nor get up and move around too much.
Although there were usually office toys in our doctor’s office, those toys would keep my children busy for about two minutes and then they were on to making havoc elsewhere. The stress at the doctor’s office was for me quite high because first off, a doctor’s office is just inherently quiet so any noise made in the office would only be magnified. Second, many of the patients in the office were not feeling well so the last thing they wanted to hear or see is children making unwanted noise and movement.
I finally realized the best solution to keeping the kids busy at the doctor’s office was to bring a bag along filled with a variety of children’s activities and things to do. Here are some of the children’s activities that I brought along to keep the kids busy at the doctor’s office.
Keep the Kids Busy Tip #1: Coloring Books and Crayons
There are so many times that I have recommended coloring books and crayons but I really believe these items are really miracles in disguise. Coloring books and crayons are so portable, not messy and keep kids busy for an extended amount of time. Coloring books and crayons are my item of choice to keep in a bag to keep the kids busy at the doctor’s office.
Keep the Kids Busy Tip #2: Etch a Sketch
This little creative activity is quiet, not messy, easy to use and children really like doing their artwork on the Etch a Sketch and erasing it, then trying it again. The full size Etch a Sketch will easily fit in a bag and there are also mini Etch a Sketch which will fit virtually in any small compartment.
Keep the Kids Busy Tip #3: Audio CD with a Book
A small disc player with head phones can be a life saver at the doctor’s office. There are so many wonderful CD’s that will read the coordinating book to the child and most kids love hearing a story read to them. Many larger public libraries offer the books and CDs for checkout for free so finding the perfect book is quite easy.
Keep the Kids Busy Tip #4: Count Popsicle Sticks
As simple as counting popsicle sticks sounds, kids really enjoy touching the sticks and counting them out. If a child is advanced, you can also have the child group the popsicle sticks into 5’s, 10’s, 20’s etc. Counting out popsicle sticks really is a great way to keep kids busy and quiet at the doctor’s office.
Keep the Kids Busy Tip #5: Bring a Photo Album
Kids love looking at photos of themselves, family members and people they know. Bringing a photo album along to the doctor’s office and letting a child look at the photos and talk about the photos is a great way to keep the kids busy at the doctor’s office. Looking at a photo album depending on how many photos there are can take an extended amount of time plus it is a relatively quiet activity.
There are ways to keep the kids busy at the doctor’s office, finding the activities that keep your children most entertained and quiet in the doctor’s office takes some experimentation and patience but there is hope in surviving the doctor’s office with kids!
