Materials You will need several yards of worsted weight white yarn, 6 inches of black yarn, knitting needles, scissors, an upholstery needle, and a small amount of stuffing. If you want to make this into a keychain, you will also need a sturdy key ring.
Head Cast on 25 stitches. Knit 25 rows in stockinette stitch. You will do this by knitting the odd rows and purling the even rows. Bind off the work and use the needle to weave in both tails. Make a second piece exactly like the first piece, 25 stitches by 25 rows. If one piece comes out looking better than the other, make this the face side.
Ears Cast on 6 stitches. Knit 2 stitches, and then pass the first stitch on your right needle over the second stitch, as though you were binding off. Continue knitting the rest of the row. Use stockinette stitch to knit 7 more rows, and then bind off. Use the needle to hide the tails. This will make the right ear. For the left ear, cast on 6 stitches and knit the first 5 stitches. Slip the last stitch onto the needle without knitting it. Purl 2 stitches on the next row, passing the first over the second. Finish the row and continue this ear just as you did the right ear.
Face Thread the needle with the black yarn, tying one end in a large knot and leaving the other end hanging about 2 inches from the eye of the needle. Count stitches or use a ruler to find the middle of one of the first rectangles you knit. Insert your needle from back to front and create a small triangle for the nose. Create eyes 2 stitches over and 1 stitch up on either side. Tie the yarn off in back.
Assembly Thread your upholstery needle as before, this time with 18 inches of the white yarn. Again starting from back to front, sew the ears to the face, just along the top of each ear. Lay the head pieces back to back and sew around the edges halfway. Insert a wad of stuffing, and then continue stitching, adding more stuffing as you go, as necessary. Tie off the thread and weave in the end.
Keychain Make a slip knot in one end of the white yarn and slide in onto the key ring, just as you would a key. Cast on 2 more stitches. Knit a 2-3 inch cord. Bind off and sew the bound off end to the corner of Potato’s head.
