It isn’t just celebrities like Tiger Woods and David Duchovney who have sex addictions. There are different kinds of sexual addictions and like any addiction, it is not healthy. Treatment is available and recovery is possible if you have the will to overcome your addiction. Here are some signs to look for if you think you or someone you know may have an addiction to sex.
Lack of intimacy.
Many sex addicts have a problem with connecting to others in a relationship. They are obsessed with the sex act but cannot share the emotional bond that makes a relationship healthy.
Sex addicts will often engage in behavior that is risky such as multiple partners, prostitutes, unprotected sex and affairs during their marriage. Their compulsion will overcome any thoughts of what their behavior could result in.
Obsessive need for gratification.
Compulsive masturbation and/or use of pornography is often a sign of unhealthy sexual attitudes. Engaging in sex with strangers, cyber-sex and looking for partners on the Internet are all indications of an unhealthy need for gratification.
When sex addiction escalates, often voyeurism, stalking, exhibitionism and even committing sexual abuse may occur.
Sexual addiction is treatable but the offender must recognize that his/her behaviors are unhealthy before treatment can begin. Often something triggers a person to confront their obsessive behavior and then upon acceptance, they can get the help they need. Usually the end of a relationship or even in some extremes, criminal charges are what it takes to get someone to face the truth of their addiction to sex.
