It’s your first semester in college, and you’re a little worried about your ability to handle it all. Already you’ve had a small argument with your roommate, and you got a C on that pop quiz in chemistry. College is supposed to be fun, but more than that—you need to succeed in order to graduate and get a job. But how can you do well in college when you’re so distracted you can’t find the dorm’s laundry room?
Relax, dear student. There’s a higher power than your R.A. in charge of your time at college. Maybe it’s wise to let God help you succeed in your college life. Here are three ways that you can allow God to play a part in your college career:
In the stress of a new environment we can forget how important it is to pray. Though it may seem obvious, be sure to pray before big tests and little quizzes. Pray before oral presentations and meetings with your professors. As you pray, know that God loves you and will answer your prayers. (And by the way, don’t forget to pray as you proofread a paper—a quick prayer can even help you catch a grammar error.)
2: Help others
One of the best and most spiritual ways to succeed in college is to stop thinking about yourself and think of others. That tiff with your roommate? Go ahead and forgive him or her, quickly. You know all about the power of forgiveness, as well as the power of going out of your way to help a fellow being. If you see a classmate struggling with an English paper, and you can write papers in your sleep—lend a hand. No, don’t write the paper yourself, but explain how to do an outline and offer to write a sample topic sentence. Your encouragement alone can go a long way toward helping your classmate discover for himself or herself how a college paper is written.
Even more important, what about that girl in the dorm who is crying herself to sleep every night? You know she’s homesick, and you know you can help—but how? Here’s where you put suggestion #1 and suggestion #2 together—pray to God for an answer on how to help the homesick student. That way you’ll be sure you’re doing it right!
3: Have faith
A lot of the anxiety associated with college comes from uncertainty. You worry endlessly about whether or not you’re going to do well. Faith can play a big role here—simple faith that the decisions you make (with God’s help of course) are the right ones.
Have faith that the classes you’ve selected will go well, and that you’ll get along with your professors. Have faith that you’ll pick the right clubs and activities to join and the right group of friends to hang out with. Have faith that you’ll pass all your courses, and get an internship, and that your college career will turn out exactly as you imagined it: fabulous!
A little assistance from God can go a long way toward relieving your worries about college. Faith and trust in God can help you get through any difficult situation.
Dear student, may you do well in college and for the rest of your wonderful life!
