Baskets are to some crafters what shoes are to some shoppers. You simply have to have them! If you’re a sucker for a unique basket, but you suddenly find yourself with a few too many, don’t set up the yard sale just yet. Turn some of those larger baskets into nice end tables and night stands. You’ll love these unique tables that are fairly simple to create.
There are certain requirements for the basket you select. One is that it have a wooden bottom. If the basket you want to use doesn’t have this feature purchase a wooden shape at a craft store to make the bottom. The wooden piece doesn’t have to be the exact size as the bottom of the basket; it can be slightly smaller or slightly larger. Although you can use nearly any large basket to make a table you can make a much nicer design if the basket is one that allows you to easily see what’s inside.
Use wood glue to attach the wooden piece to the bottom of the basket. Select the legs you want to use for the table. Craft stores or home improvement places have a nice selection of wooden leg-type pieces that will work for making the basket table.
Make a quick version that looks great, even though it can’t be moved around a lot, by simply using hot glue to attach the legs to the underside of the basket. You’ll find the legs will attach much better if you use a square-type leg that has a large, square surface for gluing. If you want, you can use wood glue to attach the legs instead, then run a screw down through each one.
Fill the basket with folded towels, artificial flowers, stuffed animals or other choices. Use glue dots from a craft or home improvement store on the four corners of the basket to attach the top. Position a piece of glass over the basket and press it into the glue dots to secure. The glass can be lifted, and the things inside the basket changed, any time you want.
If you don’t have a piece of glass to finish the table you can also use something like a cutting board or even a game board. The finished tables are so unique everyone who visits will comment on them!
