It’s fun for little girls when their favorite dolls can have nearly everything they have themselves. If the doll has a home, a bedroom, jewelry and clothes – maybe even a pet – the girl feels that her “baby” is comfortable and happy. In fact, many girls like to have their dolls do the same things they do, like taking a bath or going for a walk. If your daughter often sleeps with her doll make her a sleeping bag and they can camp out!
It’s really easy to make a sleeping bag from nearly any type of material. Really good choices include felt, short-hair fake fur or even fleece. Lay the folded fabric out on a table so that the wrong side, and the fold, are facing you. Measure the length of the doll from the top of her head to the bottoms of her feet. Measure down the fold and mark this measurement. Now measure the widest area on the doll. Go across the cloth and mark this measurement. Cut out the piece of material; leave the fold in place.
Sew across one short end of the fabric, up the side opposite the fold, then nearly all the way across the other short end. Leave a small opening so you can turn the sleeping bag right side-out. If you want the bag to be extra-padded, cut a piece of felt or other padding and lay it on one side of the fabric before stitching around the sleeping bag. After you turn the cloth right side-out, press, then sew the small opening shut. Fold the fabric in half, lengthways, then decide if you want to use Velcro or a zipper for a closure.
If you’re using Velcro you’ll first sew the bottom of the sleeping bag shut. Go across the bottom, make the corner, then sew a short ways up the side. Now cut narrow pieces of Velcro and position them along the edges of the sleeping bag. Stitch these in place and the project is finished.
If you’ll be installing a zipper start with the bag folded in half, lengthways. Pin a small zipper in, pinning it across the bottom, then up the side opposite the fold. Stitch the zipper down both sides and the sleeping bag is ready to use. Now, what’s next? Hmm, maybe a tent?
