You have guests coming over for breakfast or brunch and you need lots of unique foods that set the mood and add to the overall décor of the meal. A donut hole bouquet is absolutely perfect for the occasion. The bouquet doesn’t just hold donut holes; it can be made in many different ways to hold the foods you want. Combine different ones to make any number of edible centerpieces that are decorative and delicious!
Wooden skewers are just what you need to create the bouquet. Cut some of the skewers to be a little shorter, then some a little shorter than that. Use these to create the back, center and front of the food bouquet. Place the sticks in a vase and lay out the foods you will use to make the floral appearance.
Use several different flavors and types of donut holes for best results. Pierce these to put one on each stick, or align three or four on the same stick. Put other foods on the sticks and mix them with the donut holes. Some foods you can use include fruits, brownie pieces, cereal rings, and even candies. It’s important to remember that juicy fruits can’t be touching the donut holes. If they do, they’ll stain the donut holes, get them wet, and transfer flavors between the two foods (like strawberry juice on the donut hole and powdered sugar on the strawberry). Avoid fruits and cereals touching each other as well.
Combine foods to make unique looks for each skewer. Align the same donut holes on one skewer but put different ones on another. Place a donut hole on the skewer, then put a stack of cereal rings on, then top it off with another donut hole.
There are other things you can do to the centerpiece to make it look more like a floral bouquet. Positioning some silk leaves amongst the foods is one option. Cutting things like pineapple into flower shapes is yet another choice. Still another technique is to position a particular food choice under the donut holes. For example, skewer a peppermint patty then skewer the donut hole on top of it. Or, squeeze the juice out of a spiced apple ring with a paper towel. Position a brownie piece or other food in the hole of the apple ring so you can skewer it. Settle the donut hole on top.
There are many different “flowers” you can make depending upon the foods you choose and the way you assemble them on the skewers. The finished bouquet is beautiful and delicious. The perfect centerpiece for your breakfast or brunch!
