Designer flapper dresses can be extremely pricey. Vintage dresses are another option, but are hit and miss regarding the size and overall wearability. Your best bet is to make your own flapper dress. Fortunately, little sewing skills are necessary, since it is all about the trim.
My daughter is using this idea for her upcoming winter formal. We looked around for something appropriate, in the “right” color and within the dress code guidelines…with no luck. So we decided to customize a plain sheath dress and add accessories like long gloves, extra long beaded necklaces and a feather headband. Still looking for the perfect shoe; T-strap or pump.
To Make Your Own Flapper Dress You will Need;
Sheath dress; sleeveless, knee length cocktail dress in a solid color; black, gold, red, or your favorite color.
Fringe; at least 6 yards in the same color of the dress
Elastic headband, or barrette
Sewing machine, or needle if you are hand sewing
1. When choosing the fringe, look for the exact color as the dress or go with a metallic fringe over black, or a black fringe over red. Mix up the colors to make it uniquely yours.
2. Pin the fringe on the dress. Begin under the armholes and wrap straight across the bustline. Cut when the ends meet, pin and sew.
3. Keep wrapping and pinning layers of fringe evenly around the dress. The layers of fringe can be close, directly under each other, or place the next layer where the first layer ends.
4. Fill the dress with fringe, or place fringe on the top and around the hem of the dress.
Make a Flapper Headband
Attach feathers to an elastic headband with tacky glue. Large or small, feathers add to the glamour of the flapper style. A cloche hat can complete the look as well.
Flapper dresses look the best with long beaded necklaces. Tie a knot towards the bottom of the necklaces.
Wear T-strap shoes or black pumps, or be a little more adventurous with red, sparkly or metallic shoes.
Long satin gloves can be picked up at a costume shop.
Fishnet stockings, regular nylons or bare legs are all appropriate with the flapper style.
Choose your headwear; cloche hat, large feathers or a headband across the forehead. Check Etsy for fun, handmade flapper styles.
Slip a fake fur stole around your shoulders, or a feather boa for fun. A long vintage coat is a fun find that can keep you warm, and stylish.
