As the days of summer wane it can be hard to let go of one’s beach bum memories. Fortunately there is both a simple and elegant craft that can help remind you of the beach year round; seashell candles.
These seashell candles also make a great gift for your beach loving buddies as either a stand alone or as part of a larger beach themed gift basket. They would go nicely with homemade seashell soaps, ocean colored hand towels and ocean scented air fresher as part of a bathroom gift basket or with a bottle of wine and food items as part of a beach picnic themed gift.
In order to complete this craft you will need to assemble the following items; seashells, sand, bleach, water, tea lights, paraffin wax, hot glue gun with clear glue sticks, glass microwave safe measuring cup, microwave, knife, chopping block, pot holder, medium size bowl and ocean colored glitter(optional).
Step One: Set up the Work Area
Begin by taking out a medium sized bowl and filling it with sand. This will act as a stabilizer for the shells while you pour the wax. If you do not have sand, rice or dried beans will also do the trick.
Remove the tea lights from the cardboard packaging. Next, remove the tea light’s tin casings and set them aside. Once the casings are removed, gently withdraw the metal core from the tea light thus taking the wick with it. Set the wicks aside. The wicks will end up being used as the wicks for the seashell candles.
Set the remaining tea light wax alongside the paraffin wax. Next, take out your chopping block and knife. You will be cutting up the paraffin and tea light wax on the cutting board. Together the tea light and paraffin wax will be re-purposed as the wax for the seashell candle.
Step Two: Disinfect the Shells
Put the shells into a large stainless steel stock pot along with enough water to amply cover them. Add to the water several drops of bleach. Bring the water and bleach mixture to a rolling boil. Once the rolling boil is reached, lower the heat and let the shells simmer for 10 minutes.
Next turn off the heat and remove the pot from the stove. Leave the shells in the pot and let the whole thing cool. Once the shells are cool drain the bleach water and rinse the shells with clean tap water. Remove any stubborn stuck on dirt by hand. Let the shells dry thoroughly.
Step Three: Attach the Wick
Take one of the cleaned and dried seashells and place it in the bowl of sand cupped side up. Then take the metal core with the wick attached and hot glue gun it to the inside center of the seashell.
At this point some sand or light glitter can be added to the inside of the shell. This extra adornment is optional.
Step Four: Prepare the Wax
Proceed by cutting up the paraffin and tea candle wax into one inch cubes using your knife and cutting board. Once the cubes are cut place them in a glass, microwave safe measuring cup. Place the measuring cup with the wax into the microwave oven and microwave on high until the wax is completely melted.
Step Five: Pouring the Wax
Remove the melted wax from the microwave and immediately pour slowly it into the seashell. Be careful not to knock the wick over. Allow the wax to dry; remove the seashell from the bowl and set it aside.
Step Six: Clean Up
Repeat the above procedure until all your candles are complete. The residual wax can be removed from the glass measuring cup by soaking it in very hot water and rubbing it dry with a clean terrycloth rag.
