If you like to burn stick incense, you can make an incense burner out of polymer clay quickly and easily.
Following are instructions to make incense burners out of polymer clay in two styles. The only things you’ll need to make either of these burners are polymer clay, something to bake it on, and an oven.
How to make an incense burner volcano-style:
Step1: Choose your clay color(s) and work the clay until it looks the way you want it to, and it’s easy to mold. Remember that working the clay to shape it will continue to blend the colors and patterns.
Step 2: Roll the clay into a ball, then flatten the bottom half of the clay ball to the desired thickness and size you want for the base of your burner.
Step 3: Take the top half of the clay ball and mold it into the shape of a volcano. The whole piece should look something like a sombrero. The volcano portion should only rise about a half-inch from the flattened base. Smooth out the rough edges with your fingers or by trimming, and add any embellishments you might want.
Step 4: When you’re done molding and shaping, poke a toothpick into the top of the volcano and wiggle it around a little bit, creating the hole for the stem of the incense stick.
Make the hole big enough to fit a stick, but not too big, or the incense stick will tilt. Unless you’ve made the base of your incense burner really wide, the ash from a tilting stick will fall on the table rather than the base.
Step 5: Bake according to the polymer clay instructions, usually about 165 to 175 degrees for about 15 to 30 minutes.
Step 6 (Optional): Add glaze to your incense burner once it’s cooled.
How to make an incense burner flat-style:
Step 1: Follow the instructions for step 1 above.
Step 2: Roll the clay into a ball, then flatten the ball until you have the thickness and shape you want your burner to be. This burner will have to be thick enough to securely hold the stem of the incense stick (a quarter- to half-inch should work).
Step 3: Smooth out the edges and add embellishments if you want.
Step 4: When you’re done molding and shaping, and the burner looks the way you want it to, use a toothpick to poke a hole or holes into the clay.
Step 5 & Step 6: See instructions above.
You’re done! That’s how simple it is to make an incense burner out of polymer clay.
