The leaves are turning, the wind has picked up and there is a definite chill in the air. It must be autumn! Growing up in the Midwest, I adore the changing of the seasons, but I particularly love the fall. And in fact, every year, my family is host to an enormous Halloween costume party for all of our closest friends and family. This year, I have been elected to head up the invitation committee and so here is a great idea that I designed for a handmade Halloween bash invite with a haunted house theme:
For handcrafted haunted house Halloween party invitations, start with a stack of brown or black 8 1/2 by 11 card stock paper. Cut the cardstock in half and then fold each piece to construct a small invitation. Next, purchase several pieces of 12 by 12 Halloween themed paper from your local craft or scrapbooking store. You can also find such paper at Target’s dollar spot, Wal-Mart and even the dollar store.
Now trace a haunted house image onto your decorative Halloween paper. This is much easier than it sounds. Start with a square figure and add a few peaks to make a simple castle shape. Cut out as many haunted houses as you will need for your party invitations. One piece of 12 by 12 patterned paper should yield around 9-10 houses.
Next, adhere orange strands of garland to the back of your haunted houses. You can do this by purchasing orange tree garland in the Halloween department of your local Target or Walgreen’s. Then cut bunches of small strands from the garland to give your cards some bling.
Now, with elevated foam adhesions, apply your castles to the cards for a 3-D effect. You may also want to attach a small door to the front of your houses using a small black or brown rectangular piece of leftover card stock paper. And then consider adding a harvest moon with a circular piece of gold or yellow paper and a black bat, ghost or witch flying through the sky.
On the inside of your handmade Halloween party invitations; include a piece of white card stock paper with all of the pertinent party information like: the date, time, address, etc. And these adorable homemade haunted house invites can also double as Halloween greeting cards to give to family and friends this autumn season or even to use on a festive fall scrapbooking page.
