One of my favorite Christmas ornaments is a homemade reindeer I made when I was just five years old. This is a great craft for young kids because it’s so simple to do that there is virtually no way of messing it up. Children will love making their own homemade Christmas ornaments, and parents will love that it doesn’t make a huge mess. It’s also sturdy enough that it won’t break if dropped, which is always a big plus if you have several young children running around.
The supplies you need to make these homemade Christmas ornaments are fairly basic and can be found at any local craft store, or even grocery store.
Things You Need
Christmas colored ribbons or strings
Optional: Pipe cleaners
Once you have all the crafts for your homemade ornament ready, set out the popsicle sticks so they make a triangle and glue them together. This will be the reindeers head. As you wait for the popsicle sticks to dry, ask your child what kind of Christmas reindeer they would like their ornaments to be of. For example, do they want a boy reindeer or a girl reindeer? A reindeer with a red nose, or a black nose? This allows young children some amount of creativity with their crafts.
Once the popsicle sticks on your homemade ornaments are dry, you can select two googly eyes to glue on the head of your reindeer. They can be any color you want, or if you prefer, you can have them be red and green Christmas colors.
After the eyes are glued on, it’s time for the pompom nose. This goes at the pointy end of your homemade Christmas ornaments. Young children might need some adults to help them with this part, as pompoms can sometimes roll of the end of the sticks.
If your child wants, they can glue ribbons to the head of the girl reindeer, or decorate their homemade Christmas ornaments with markers, glitters, or anything else they can think of.
Once every part of your homemade Christmas ornament have dried, flip it over and glue on a strip of ribbon. This will be how the ornaments hangs from your Christmas tree. If you don’t have ribbon, this can also be done with a piece of string.
While your homemade ornaments are flipped over, you can decided whether or not you would like to add antlers to it. These can be shaped out of pipe cleaners and taped or glued to the back or the ornaments.
Once your done making your homemade ornaments, allow them to dry completely before hanging it from your Christmas tree.
Not only does this make a very cute homemade Christmas project, but you can also have young children make them as a Christmas presents for friends and family. After all, you can never have too many cute ornaments!
