If you’re planning a birthday party for a child, you know that the crowd of kids can get out of hand quite quickly without something to occupy each of them. For this reason, it has become something of a tradition to hand out party bags and party favors to each birthday party going child. Often, party bags will have small items like plastic figures and bouncy balls. These are okay, but can get quickly lost amongst the children. So why not give them something bigger.
Many children love to play with toy swords and guns, but that can get expensive if you have a lot of birthday party guests. You need to find something that won’t blow the budget. One option would be to make lightsabers. If made properly, these party favors can be safe, and cheap to construct. Here’s how:
First, you’ll need some water noodle pool toys. These can be bought at Wal-Mart, or most other superstores for a few bucks a piece or less. Buy them in multiple colors so that you can make lightsabers in different colors. Once you have these, find a good serrated-edge bread knife and cut each one in half. These pool toys are 56 inches in length, so you’ll get two 28 inch pieces from each one.
The second thing you’ll need is silver duct tape. Yes, this stuff really is good for anything! Now, start at one end of the 28 inch foam pool noodle and wrap duct tape around it, making several rings until you have covered the first seven inches. This will be the handle of your lightsaber birthday party favor.
The third thing you will need is black electrical tape. Starting at the bottom of the silver duct tape handle, measure up 1-1/2 inches. At this point wrap two strips of electrical tape around the light saber handle. Now measure up 6-1/2 inches from the bottom of the light saber and wrap two more strips around the handle.
The last thing you will need is red fingernail polish. This will be used to make a red button on the lightsaber. Every lightsaber should have an “on and off” button. You can use a red marker for this, but marker tends to rub off of the slipper surface of the duct tape. The fingernail polish, on the other hand, will stick well and it will dry with a little bit of thickness to it, giving it a button sort of feel. So, measure down 1 inch below the second black electrical tape band and paint a red dot about the size of a dime on the duct tape lightsaber handle.
You now have a soft, kid friendly lightsaber that the children will love. Whether they like Luke Skywalker’s blue lightsaber, Darth Vader’s red lightsaber or Yoda’s green light saber, you can make each child happy.
Now, only one more thing needs to be done. Write the children’s names on the bottoms of their lightsaber party favor around the hole that goes through the water noodle. This will help each child to feel a little more special on this great birthday occasion.
