Packing a military-style survival bag is a relatively simple process. The most difficult portion is determining what items are necessary for your mission. You should pack lightly because you have to carry all of your gear, but you must also pack everything that you will need. Lack of planning and proper supplies can mean the difference between completing the assigned mission, or failing yourself, your teammates and your unit. Likewise, if you are going on an outdoor adventure, the same principles apply.
Create a packing list
Determine the items necessary for your mission. Make sure you include the gear necessary for every aspect of your excursion, from start to finish. The most obvious thing to pack is plenty of clothing and any accessories you might need. Extra clean undershirts and socks are a must-have. Travel size containers of toiletries, including a large size package of baby wipes or personal towelettes should also be included. Personal snacks and light reading material may also be desired.
Gather and inspect items
Next, the gather the items needed for your trip , and purchase any items that are missing. Inspect all gear to ensure serviceability, replacing any worn or broken items. Items that are necessary for almost every outdoor trip are paper and writing utensils, a clean canteen for drinking water, a compass, multi-purpose tool with knife, flashlight and extra batteries, extra footwear, and plastic self-sealing storage bags. You may also wish to take a small tent, sleeping bag, and other outdoor camping gear.
Pack the gear in your bag
It is a great idea to purchase a large military-style duffel bag. These can be obtained from military surplus stores, or many online retailers. Pack larger, heavier items on the bottom of the bag, and lighter items on top. Any items that will be more frequently used will be packed toward the top of the bag, or in outer cargo pockets. You can also wear a web-belt with storage pouches to store snacks, a canteen and flashlight. The most important aspect of any trip is to be fully prepared for any issues that may arise. By taking your time and packing correctly, you can have a fun, satisfying experience, no matter where you choose to go.
