It is predicted that a little over a million people will have a heart attack in the United States in the near future. The good news is that a heart attack can be avoided, but many of us may not know exactly what to do to keep from getting one. They may know a few of the causes for an attack, but may not know all of them. If we all decided to avoid the following common causes for a heart attack, we can avoid having one.
Although family history can play a large role in causing heart attacks, there are other factors that are involved, and knowing these, can help prevent it from happening. Let’s see if we can follow the following suggested rules: Lower your cholesterol if it is too high, exercise regularly, lower your blood pressure, control your weight, stop smoking, and control your blood sugar. Some of us may know the above rules, but it is important to discuss them in more detail to really be able to follow these rules.
When the cholesterol level is too high, this can be a danger sign. This means it Is necessary to reduce your fat intake. There are two major types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. The saturated fat is the type of fat that can cause the cholesterol to go up. This is the type of fat that we find in meats and certain dairy products. The saturated fats are the fats that clogs up your artery walls known as plaque, and raises the cholesterol level. To find out if your foods have too much saturated fat or cholesterol, make sure you look at the labels when you go shopping. If you do eat meats that have a lot of fat around it, cut off as much fat from it as you can. If you realize how much of that fat will clog your arteries, you will definitely try to cut out all of that fat.
It is also important to know that not all foods that are high in cholesterol are high in fat. For example, liver and egg yolks are not high in fat but they are high in cholesterol and should be limited.
Lowering your blood pressure is also important when trying to avoid a heart attack. High blood pressure can damage artery walls, causing them to become stiff and narrow. The ideal blood pressure should be below 120/80. If diet and exercise does not help than your doctor will probably prescribe medication for it.
The reason why weight control is important, because it is likely to keep your cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar down.
It is important to keep your blood sugar down because it can also cause plaques. Doctors may tell you that to be safe, your blood sugar level, tested after fasting, should be from 70 to 130 milligrams. Your doctor will know if you are within the normal range or not.
