Guess who else agrees with me? The ever reliable Prevention magazine! In a recent article by Richard Laliberte, written for the October 2010 issue, you’ll find plenty of lifestyle options and choices that can lower your risk of cancer in a dramatic way. Here’s some of the do’s and don’ts.
5 cups of coffee daily
Yayyyy!! I’m so excited about this seeing as I’m a coffee freak! This article states that in a British study done in 2010, a 5 cup daily habit of drinking this engaging beverage decreases specific cancers of things like the brain and pharynx as well as mouth types of cancer. The best part of it all is the credit for this goes directly to the caffeine! Researchers from Britian found that coffee is a more effective cancer preventation measure than it’s arch rival tea.
Eat REALLY GREEN green foods
The darker the green, the better. This indicates more magnesium content which has been shown to be helpful for colon cancer, according to many large studies done on the subject. Magnesium is also significant in helping to facilitate cell signals. If that’s not occurring correctly or in the right amount, the result could be cells that are replicating and dividing when they shouldn’t be. Spinach is a great source magnesium, even cooked it packs a 75 mg. dose of magnesium per ½ cup.
Filter your tap water
Filtered tap water is a great way to reduce any exposure to many cancer causing carcinogens, as well as substances that disrupt hormone activity. It’s been found by the President’s Cancer Panel that water that’s been filtered in the home has been found to be safer than bottled water, which in many cases appears to be worse than even tap water from municipalities
Drink more water
Keeping yourself well hydrated is a great way to dilute and wash away bladder cancer. The regular flushing through of cancer causing types of substances will detoxify and clean out the bladder, making a healthy preventative environment that’s cancer free. Sticking to the old standby of 8 glasses daily is what the American Cancer Society suggests.
Pass on dry cleaning
The dry cleaning process uses a substance called perc, aka perchloroethylene. This chemical may be the culprit of kidney and liver cancers, as well as leukemia according to a study back by the EPA early in 2010 by the National Academics of Science. The biggest risk is posed to those who work in that business and are operating with older machines. Handwashing clothes is about the safest alternative, accompanied by air drying and using vinegar to spot clean.
