A death in the family is a tragedy that is never easy to cope with. If the deceased was a UK citizen visiting or living in the USA, how and where should you register the death?
Where Registration Takes Place
According to the British Embassy in Washington DC, the death of a UK citizen is carried out by the Consular office in Washington. The British Embassy can provide advice, including bereavement support, in the case of a death that has occurred as a result of natural causes. In addition, the British Embassy in Washington DC can offer support if the deceased died under suspicious circumstances.
If the deceased died while travelling with a tour company, the tour company will help with making the necessary final arrangements with the next of kin. It is a legal requirement for the death of the UK national to be reported and registered in the United States, where they died. The police, hospital and Coroner’s Office can advise you further on what you need to do to report the death. A Consular registration of death can also be made, which will mean the death will also be reported in the General Register Office (GRO), but this is optional, and not a legal requirement.
