Fat adds a considerable amount of calories to food, and it is often present in canned processed products such as stews, soups, and chili. Fat enhances the flavor of food, but when consumed in excess, it is unhealthy in more ways than one. It is possible to remove a large portion of the fat. Instead of simply consuming fatty prepared food, take steps to get rid of some of the grease and oil. It all adds up, but in many cases it is easy to remove fat using these calorie-reducing tips and tricks.
Add a Few Ice Cube to Greasy Cooked Soups and Stews
Canned processed food is not the only variety that often contains too much fat. Sometimes meat looks lean and does not seem to require blotting or draining, but it ends up floating on the surface of hot prepared dishes and ends up making them unappetizing as well as unhealthy. It is possible to spoon out some of the grease on hot food, but inevitably some of the fat ends up mixed in. Remove a majority of grease and oil in foods with sauce using this easy method.
Turn off the heat, and allow the food to sit for several minutes without stirring it. Much of the fat will float to the top and gather around the edges of the pan. Place a few ice cubes on the surface in areas of visible fat. The grease and oil will solidify and cling to the ice cubes. Remove the ice cubes to remove the grease from fatty food. Do this as many times as necessary to remove most of the grease, and reheat the dish if it becomes too cool in the process.
Blot Greasy Pizza
Lower quality cheeses can produce a considerable amount of liquid fat when melted. Fatty meats such as pepperoni also create unwanted grease. Instead of consuming it, use paper towels or napkins to blot it away. Remove the fat to remove a considerable amount of calories. It can make a big difference.
Refrigerate Canned Food Before Preparation
Whenever possible, remove the grease from canned food before preparation. When planning to prepare canned food that contains any amount of grease, place the cans in the refrigerator for at least an hour before opening. Upon opening the cans the fat will be in solid form at the top, and it will be very easy to remove.
