This is because Sims tend to get upset if you leave a dirty object in your house for too long. It will give them a negative moodlet that won’t disappear till the item is cleaned. If you put the salvage items in a room that your Sims rarely go into, they’ll be much less likely to get upset over a dirty house.
Once you have all the items you want to salvaged placed inside your home, call the repair man. If you don’t already know how to do this, you simply go to phone, click call for services, and repair man. He should arrive in about an hour to fix your items.

If your Sims prefer to salvage the items by themselves, you can have them continue to invent until they reach level 10. Then you must have them learn how to repair objects by increasing their handiness skills. After that, you should start getting a few opportunities in town about inventing and repairing fellow Sims items. Once your Sims do between three to five opportunities for other Sims, you should get the option to salvage items yourself.
Currently the salvage option in Sims 3 Ambition is glitchy. Some players have reported not being able to salvage an item on their own, even after doing the above. This will likely be fixed when a new patch comes out for the game.
While the above method may be glitchy, the repair man option should always work. You only have to call him once and he will automatically repair all items on your lot, making your Sims a nice profit.
