One of my favorite things to do on a cold winter afternoon while my son is napping is to pull out my sewing machine and make him clothes. Nothing feels better when someone asks, “Were did he get that adorable outfit?” is saying “I made it!” There are many free patterns online available to print, one of my favorite’s being Katrina’s Sew Quick Longies Pattern. It is very simple, easy to change to your preference, and comes in many different sizes.
Fleece in your color choice (about 1/2 a yard is plenty, even less if you’re making a smaller size like newborn)
Thread in your choice of colors
Scraps of fabric for embellishment (optional)
Pattern (found here)
Cut out the pattern in the size you need and a copy of the waist band. *Tip* Leave your waistband at the largest size (XL) and place the dotted line on the fold of your fabric instead of cutting it to your needed size. This way you won’t have to print additional copies as your child grows. You’ll also need to get the inseam of the child you’re making the pants for. For wiggly toddlers, sometimes it’s easier to measure a pair of nice-fitting pants instead.
Fold your fabric so your print side (or ‘right’ sides) is facing each other. Pin your pattern to your fabric and cut out your pieces. If pining is not your thing, don’t worry! Just do whatever is comfortable for you.
Once the pattern is cut it’s time to sew! Sew up the sides of your fleece evenly. Pull the fabric apart so your sewed edge is now in the middle. This is where you’ll begin to see your ‘pants’. If you want to hem the pants, it’s easiest to do so now while the legs are ‘flat’. Sew up the leg of the pants, around the crotch and down the other leg.
now is time to add your waistband! Fold your waistband piece in half lengthwise and sew it in to your pants with all your raw edges together, pulling the waistband while you sew to create an elastic-like effect with your fleece.
Turn your pants inside out and you’re done! Embellish it if you like or just leave them plain for a cozy pair of baby or toddler pants.
