The great thing about living in San Antonio is that there are so many things to do and so much tradition in the area. There are many annual events that take place in the weeks leading up to Christmas and it can be hard to decide which ones to attend. Some of the highlights of this holiday season are listed below:
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan – Anyone who is a fan of the mariachi needs to attend this event that takes place from November 28th through December 4th at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio. Some of the events are free and others may cost a few dollars but it is worth it to see one of the best mariachi bands in the area.
Hecho a Mano/Made by Hand – Are you looking for that special gift for the person who is difficult to buy for? There is always one person in our life that simply has everything or they have very distinct tastes that make it hard to actually find something that they love or even like. The Hecho a Mano/Made by Hand takes place December 3-5 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Now, this is not just a hodgepodge of any artists that wants to get in on this. These artists were chosen through a jury system that voted for those who they think are the most talented and who offer wares that are wanted by the general public. You can pay a $10 entry fee on Friday the 3rd or $2 on Saturday or Sunday. Those who bring in two canned food goods for the needy get in free.
Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias – This is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years and marks the beginning of the holiday season in San Antonio. Take the river walk on any weekend before Christmas starting on December 3rd. There are hundreds of bags filled with sand and candles that represent the lighting of the way for the holy couple that is heading to Bethlehem to birth Jesus. Make sure to get there early as the walk begins at dusk Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
