This is my first year in college and it’s really overwhelming. Surprisingly, my stress levels have stayed low. How; I am staying on top of everything that I need to do. Here are a few things that I have done so far this year that have helped me do well and stay relatively stress free in college.
Decorate: You’re room needs to be a reflection of yourself. But don’t over decorate!!! If you have too much clutter it will cause you major stress. Put up a few posters. I have a dream catcher right above my bed which I believe helps keep the room calm. Move things around until you feel comfortable.
Reminders: You’re on your own now. You’re parents aren’t here to check your homework or tell you what to do. Invest in a planner! I have a planner, a dry erase board, a one week calendar/dry erase board, and a one month calendar dry erase board. Use post it’s if you must. Make sure that you have what you need to get done written down everywhere so you won’t forget.
Work Ahead: You have more free time then you think. When you get back to your room after a class, start working on homework that’s due for that class next week. If you can’t sleep at night, believe me it happens, get some work or studying done.
Go to Class: As cool as it might sound to skip class, you’re really only hurting yourself. I go to a small school and most of my classes are small. However, my Psychology class is in a lecture hall with about 180 students. The majority of which don’t show up for class unless it’s exam day. To reward those of us who do go to class, our professor lets us makes up a couple of questions that are going to be on the exam. The students that were in class, believe it or not, don’t tell the students that weren’t in class the questions or the answers. You’re paying for your education, get the most of out of your money.
Study: This is high school. Cramming isn’t as easy. Work on your time management. Study a little bit every night if you have to. You will not do well if you do not study. I even know a girl who recopies all of her notes for every single class!
Be Social: No one knows you. You’re starting over, no one cares who or what you were in high school. Say hi to everyone, what have you got to lose?
Take Advantage of Opportunities: Like I mentioned earlier, you’re paying to go to college, take advantage! Go to the writing centers, your professor’s office hours, any tutoring opportunity that you can. Your University wants you to do well.
Call Your Family: They raised you and they love you. Believe it or not, you’re going to miss them. Stay in touch with them and let them know how much you love them. Send them thank you cards and letters. They’ll really appreciate it.
Make Nice With Your Roommate: You and your roommate may not be BFF’s. But make sure that you’re not enemies! You have to live with this person for a whole year! Make chit chat whenever possible, ask if they need anything before you go buy shampoo, ask if they’re hungry before you go to eat. You don’t have to hang out with each other every second, but if you get along with one another it will make your life much more peaceful.
Make Time For Yourself: This is about you, after all. Make sure you have time to yourself every day. Even if it’s the moments before you fall asleep, or even in the shower. Reflect on your day, how well you did, what you need to do, how you feel, what you want. Don’t forget the most important person, yourself!
