The normal process for getting a U.S. drivers license is to take a drivers ed class, take a test to get a permit and then get a full license after passing the hands-on driving test. The initial test is required to get a learners permit. Each state creates its own test material and test questions. Applicants for a learners permit should learn what to study and where to find a learners permit practice test for their state’s version of the driver’s permit and license test.
The first step should always be to check drivers ed resources in your state. You will get plenty of learners permit practice tests by attending a driver’s ed course, which is often a requirement just to get a permit and driver’s license. Unless you actually enroll, though, you will likely not have access to such study materials. Thus, you should continue on and look for more resources for state permit practice tests.
The next logical place to look is your state drivers manual or handbook. This is the publication with the state traffic rules and laws that you are expected to master to pass a test for your learners permit. Many of these state driving manuals have a learners permit practice test or practice questions within the actual publication.
To find your own state’s drivers’ handbook, go to the local DMV office or the office of whatever agency happens to administer the state driver licensing program. Of course, this will be the same agency that administers the learners permit test. You can also look online. For example, the agency that administers permit tests in Minnesota is the Department of Public Safety. You can find that state’s drivers manual on the Minnesota DPS website at dps.state.mn.us/dvs/DLTraining/DLManual/ManualLangChoice.htm. However, such questions are usually limited and may not give you enough practice to be confident that you can pass the permit test. This is why you need to look for multiple sources to prepare for the test.
Note: Most states have at least three manuals — one each for cars, commercial vehicles (CDL license) and motorcycles. Just choose the correct manual for the permit you are studying to obtain.
Now, you should always check the website of the agency not just to look for the driver’s manual. Some state websites also have sample learners permit practice tests for your benefit. For example, the Georgia Department of Driver Services has an online practice permit test at dds.ga.gov/Training/pt_intro.aspx. Georgia drivers can do these practice questions knowing that they are relevant to Georgia’s driver’s license and permit test. Just keep in mind that study manuals and laws differ from state to state.
The last thing you can do is go online and find free or paid driver’s permit practice tests through various websites. You can find many practice questions and tests by simply searching for “learners permit practice test” in any search engine. For example, FreeDMVPracticeTests.com has some free sample questions for every state’s permit test. However, keep in mind that you will need to double check the answers with your state’s current driver’s license manual to make sure the information is current and correct.
