First of all, there are different degrees of burns that you should know about. It is important to know what the different degrees of burns are in order to treat your burn effectively. The treatment of your burn will depend on the level of severity.
A first degree burn is the least painful of the types of burns. Having said that, it’s still a painful experience to have the top layer of your epidermis (skin) burned. When you burn yourself with a curling iron or if you get a small sunburn, these are examples of first degree burns.
A second degree burn means your skin has been burned more deeply than just the top layer, but it has not burned all the way through to your tissue. You will know that a second degree burn has occurred if blisters form on your skin or if there is swelling at the burn site. Do not pop blisters.
A first degree burn and a second degree burn are usually treated in the same way. Here is how you would go about treating these kinds of burns. Rinse the burn off in the sink with water. Make sure the water is lukewarm or cool. You don’t want to put ice on the burn either. Now you will only loosely cover the burn site with a bandage if you need to do something that might end up in the burn getting dirty or infected. It is important to be extra sanitary when dealing with burns. You want to avoid infection at all costs. If you don’t have to cover the burn, leave it. Also spray some disinfectant spray onto the burn. If the pain becomes too much, take an Advil or your choice of pain reliever.
A third degree burn requires a different kind of treatment than the above mentioned, since it is so severe. A third degree burn has actually burned your skin layers all the way to your tissue and caused nerve damage. When you have a burn like this, first you need to dial 911.
If you have a friend or family member to help you until emergency medical services arrive, that would be good. You need someone to get a wash cloth and run it under some cool water, then apply it to the area that has been burned. Just try to relax until the ambulance comes. There is only so much you can do at home for these severe burns. Most of your treatment needs to be done by a doctor.
