Clean, white teeth are signs of health and also beauty. Daily brushing and flossing are the keys to healthy white teeth but these don’t always get rid of stains. Here are some methods to keep your teeth white, healthy and nice looking.
Watch what you drink:
The first key to white teeth is to avoid or not drink very many teeth-staining drinks. Coffee, red wine, grape juice, tea and dark-colored soda all stain teeth. Try drinking these drinks less frequently or if you do, try to brush your teeth or chew on gum afterwards to prevent staining. Soda is also bad for your teeth because the acid can wear away the enamel and the sugar can cause cavities.
Besides the cancer-causing factor of tobacco, it also stains your teeth and makes your breath smell terrible. If you want white teeth don’t smoke. If you must smoke, try to brush your teeth immediately afterwards to avoid stains.
Eat raw fruits and vegetables:
Fruits and vegetables are healthy for your body and a healthy body equals a healthy mouth. The raw vegetables also scrub your teeth to prevent stains.
Whitening teeth at home:
A good tooth-brushing schedule can help prevent stains. Brush your teeth for two-minutes in the morning and evening. A manual soft-bristle toothbrush is fine but an electric toothbrush is better. Use a gentle whitening toothpaste. To keep your teeth white these steps should always be taken. Another easy way to whiten your teeth at home is to brush with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Dip a little bit of baking soda onto your toothbrush, dampen with hydrogen peroxide and brush for two minutes. Do this in the evening.
Buying whitening strips or bleaches over the counter:
There are some excellent whitening strips or bleaching kits that can be bought over the counter at drug stores for around $20-$50. Make sure you follow the directions carefully and have patience with the procedure; which could take over a month before you see results.
Dentists like selling whitening to patients because they can make a lot of money in a short amount of time. This is the last tooth whitening method you should consider if you are on a budget or just can’t be bothered to easily whiten your teeth yourself. Dental whitening usually involves a peroxide gel that’s brushed onto the teeth and then are whitened with a special laser. This shouldn’t be done too often because your teeth could take on a transparent bluish look. These procedures can cost hundreds of dollars.
Teeth whitening procedures you should avoid:
Avoid veneers or anything that has to do with removing or filing down your real teeth. Veneers involve the shaving down of your teeth so the perfect-looking veneer can be placed on top. It seems like an easy solution to instant white teeth, but the long-term affects aren’t too pretty, plus they’re pretty costly. Veneers will make your teeth very sensitive because the shaving-down-of-your-teeth process will expose nerves in your real teeth so you’ll feel pain forever when drinking or eating anything cold or hot. Veneers also will stain around where the veneer is placed so you’ll eventually get a dark line outlining the veneer. Veneers also wear out, crack and are costly to replace. Your real teeth are much stronger than any veneer will ever be and with proper care will last forever without these problems. Why go to all that trouble of daily pain, weird stain lines and decades of dental problems just for the vanity of instant white teeth? Don’t even consider veneers. Just be patient, keep your real teeth and try some of the other teeth whitening methods above.
