Despite our best efforts, teeth tend to darken and stain over time. Some foods contribute to this more than others, such as red wine, coffee, and tea. And as most people know, smoking will turn your teeth yellow. Routine brushing just doesn’t seem to be enough to keep our teeth their whitest. There are quite a few commercial dental whitening systems on the market today, however, they tend to be expensive. Also, some of the ingredients, such as carbamide peroxide, which are effective at whitening teeth, can cause sensitivity of the teeth and/or gums. So the question is, are there ways to naturally whiten your teeth?
Using strawberries is a great way to whiten your teeth because they contain enzymes that do the whitening. Just rub your teeth with a fresh strawberry. Brush thoroughly afterwards with toothpaste to remove the natural sugars that are left on your teeth by the strawberries.
Extra virgin olive oil can be used to help remove stains. After you finish with your regular brushing, using a Q-tip or soft cloth, rub your teeth with the olive oil. It is nonabrasive and very mild.
Try using baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Apply to your toothbrush and brush gently. Baking soda is slightly abrasive, so make sure you brush gently in order not to cause any damage to tooth enamel over time. Also, thoroughly rinse your mouth when you are done.
Hydrogen peroxide is also used to whiten teeth. It kills the bacteria on your teeth. You can use it as a mouthwash by mixing it with water and swishing. Or you can brush your teeth directly with hydrogen peroxide.
An orange peel rub can help to naturally whiten your teeth. Just rub your teeth with the inside of an orange peel. This helps remove stains and therefore makes your teeth whiter.
And finally, a natural, mild way to whiten your teeth is to eat crunchy raw vegetables and fruits such as celery, apples, and radishes. The chewing action helps to clean the surfaces of the teeth.
So don’t spend your hard-earned money on expensive and harsh commercial teeth whitening systems. Try these methods listed above and watch your teeth gradually whiten!
