I don’t remember much about the birth of my daughter, but one thing that I couldn’t get out of my mind was a comment one of the nurses made when I was in the delivery room. “Look at the size of those thighs,” she remarked to another nurse. She probably thought I was too groggy to hear, but her words burned in my memory. I had always been chubby…as a child and adult. But when I found I only dropped nine of the 35 lbs. I gained during my pregnancy, I knew I needed help.
Weight Watchers was a new phenomenon in the 70’s, and I happened to get a mimeographed copy of the original diet from a friend. It was pretty strict diet…no mayonnaise, oil, sugar, desserts. I found it difficult to stick to, until I saw an ad in our local paper about a Weight Watchers meeting in our area which offered tips on a newer, more flexible version of the plan and the support of a leader and others on the same quest to healthy weight loss.
I showed up at my first meeting, and was surprised at the number of people. The auditorium was packed, and up on the stage was what looked like a restaurant table, set with dishes, flowers and menus. A slim, well dressed woman came out on stage and began to read off success stories…the names of those in the group that had a weight loss the previous week. As each name was read, the crowd went wild. The smiling member went up to the front to receive a handshake and the adulation of the crowd. Then, our leader went on stage and through a role play with several members, showed us how we could order from a restaurant menu and still have a good weight loss. They had so much fun, and we did, too. I immediately felt that I had found the way to stop dieting and focus more on health and wellness.
Weight Watchers was more than a diet, it was an eating plan which helped you lose weight and gain confidence and self-respect. I was hooked. I faithfully followed my program booklet (which I still have) and after 10 months lost 43 ½ pounds. No pills, no deprivation. I learned how to eat the right things for my body. Weight Watchers got me of the dieting roller coaster, and back on track to a healthier lifestyle.
