Fall has begun, October is arriving this week and there are 5 Saturdays in which to kick off the fall season and have some family fun! What will your family do to have fun during the month of October? Other than packing away the shorts, pulling out the lightweight jackets, and filling dresser drawers with blue jeans and long sleeve shirts, I can think of many activities that are loads of fun for families to do. After reading my suggestions, check out your local community calendar to see what’s available in your own backyard and plan a month chock full of family fun activities!
Places to go on the 5 Saturdays in October!
-Visit an Apple or Pumpkin farm and pick your own apples to make homemade fried apple pies or dumplings, or pick out a pumpkin to carve, and gourds for fall decorating.
-Attending high school or college football games is very popular among families in SC in October.
-Fall is a great time to visit your local zoo because it’s cooler and the animals may be more active than in the summer heat.
-Many towns have hot air balloon festivals in October. Visit hotairballoon.com to find one near you.
–Going to the county fair, getting on rides, and eating foot long hotdogs and cotton candy is a fun thing to do as a family during October.
-Take a drive to the mountains to see the leaves turning beautiful fall colors if possible. Take your camera and take some great shots of gorgeous fall foliage.
Things to do on the 5 Saturdays in October!
-Catch a hay ride! A cozy outing, this is a good thing to do on a crisp fall evening.
–Take a hike, whether it is a simple trail or climbing a mountain peak, this is great exercise now that the weather is cooler.
-Fall is a great time to get a head start on spring blooms by planting fall bulbs now.
-Take a Saturday to rake leaves either in your yard as a family or rake the yard of an elderly neighbor as a family ministry.
-Register the kids for fall baseball, flag football, or soccer.
-If you’re feeling crafty, search the internet for fall craft projects.
-Research Columbus Day on Oct. 11. This will be a great history lesson for the kids!
– Volunteer as a family at the local food bank or Meals on Wheels.
– Invite a neighborhood family to attend your church’s fall festival.
-Plan a Halloween party for just your family or for the whole block where you live!
– Sort through your closets to find clothing to donate to your local Goodwill or thrift store.
– Get a jump on Christmas one Saturday and go Christmas shopping.
