Fresh off a successful guest spot on FOX’s hit show “Glee,” Idina Menzel is getting her own show, as ABC is currently developing not one, but two musical-themed shows. The hour-long show will feature Idina, a Tony Award winner, as a single mom of a teenager who waits tables and sings at bar mitzvahs and the like to make ends meet. The series will be written by Bob Kushell, who recently has credits such as “Samantha Who?” to his name.
Everyone always knew that Idina was a Broadway darling; she created the roles of Elphaba in “Wicked” and Maureen from “Rent,” but what “Glee” did for her was to showcase her ability to relate to a broader range of audiences. “Glee” has become one of the most watched shows of the past few years, and while this show is very guest-star heavy, in my opinion, Idina stood out. Her duet with Lea Michelle, (her daughter on the show, for those who don’t watch) was one of the best moments of both seasons and certainly showed her ability to carry a show herself. Although relatively new to television, Idina’s husband Taye Diggs is one of the stars of ABC’s “Private Practice,” so if she needs any pointers, she knows where to go.
The new show looks to be in the style of “Gilmore Girls,” and we all know what a huge success that show was. If they can get someone a little more well known to play Idina’s teenage daughter, then ABC could finally, after several failed attempts, capitalize on the musical genre that its sister station Disney Channel started with “High School Musical.” Too bad Lea Michelle’s busy…she looks exactly like Idina and we all saw on “Glee” how good their mother-daughter dynamic could get.
Being a huge fan of Idina, while I wish she would get back on Broadway, I look forward to more information about this show, such as casting and when it will be aired, and I think that this will be a very enjoyable show for people to watch.
