As the creator of the Green ABC’s for Kids, I make it my business on a daily basis to find new, innovative, and sustainable products that are fun and good for our kids and our families. And, it never hurts when I find a product that is not only made naturally, but is also a family business!
I found Goat Milk Stuff just in the way I find all kinds of great green things- I went in search of sustainable, green soap that I could use on a daily basis that was reasonable in price, but was also utilizing natural ingredients. I was also doing a little early Christmas shopping. I decided I wanted to find out more about Goat Milk Stuff and their great products and so I contacted P.J. Jonas, the owner of Goat Milk Stuff, and here is what I found out.
ABS) When reading your website I noticed you started Goat Milk Soap with the desire to make sure the soaps used for your family were chemical free- – what gave you the idea to make soap from goat’s milk?
PJ) I didn’t like to feed my children unhealthy, overly processed food. As a part of eating healthy, we had acquired several dairy goats. We would drink their milk and made cheese and yogurt with it. When I realized that the bath products I was using on the children’s skin were full of chemicals, I knew that I had to make healthy soap for them to use. I had heard of goat milk soap before, so it was an easy decision to use goat milk instead of water in our soap. What I didn’t realize was that the goat milk would provide such a moisturizing quality to the soap. Even though I made the soap for the children, it was my husband, Jim that benefited the most. When I put the soap into our shower and he started using it daily, his fingertips stopped cracking and splitting the way they had done for years.
Once we started selling, it was amazing the response to the soap. Lots of people loved the soap because it was natural, smelled great, and left their skin soft. I was really surprised by the large number of people who started using the purity soap because it helped their eczema and other skin conditions. My favorite story was about a woman who had seen a television interview on our business. She drove an hour and a half to my house to pick up some soap. She told me that for four years she had suffered with a painful skin condition that all the doctors and dermatologists she’d seen had been unable to relieve. She’d never heard of goat milk soap, so she thought she’d try it out. Five days later she wrote to tell me that her skin was no longer painful. I never cease to be amazed at what using natural ingredients can accomplish.
ABS) Would you say that all of your products are completely organic?
PJ) No, I don’t say that our products are all organic, but I do say that they are natural. Getting organic certification is a very expensive process, and one that we don’t intend to take with our goats. Our goats are raised very naturally on grass hay, alfalfa pellets, and whole oats. But because each of these things are not certified organic, our goat milk isn’t certified organic. I use the healthiest, most natural ingredients that I can find, while keeping the prices affordable for most families.
ABS) Do you ship your products all over the world?
PJ) Yes, we’ve shipped our products to each of the 50 states. For the longest time, we were in 49 states, with Delaware being the holdout. We used to joke that there must be a lot of dirty people in Delaware. LOL! Our soap has also been on all 7 continents ‘” yes, our soap has even been used at a research facility in Antarctica! Some of the countries include Malaysia, Singapore, China, Germany, Iraq, Ireland, New Zealand, and lots of others.
ABS) What is a foot scrubby?
PJ) We take a loofah sponge and we fill it with soap. We then cut the loofah into discs. To make our foot scrubbies, we add peppermint essential oil which is excellent for rejuvenating tired feet. The loofah sponge is a great way to exfoliate feet and keep them soft and looking great in sandals. The goat milk soap also helps to keep them moisturized so they don’t crack and split. We also have a peppermint bath fizzy that lots of people like to use in a foot bath before using their foot scrubby. And it’s always great to finish up with the peppermint lotion stick.
ABS) What are your plans for the future of Goat Milk Stuff?
PJ) We would love to have Goat Milk Stuff grow to the point that it’s big enough to support the children when they’re older if the children want to continue working for the business. We have a very active facebook page where we get lots of feedback on what new scents people want and what other natural products they are looking for. We’ve currently got a natural deodorant and eye cream in research and development.
How is this for new and unusual? Goat Milk Stuff products are natural and healthy to use. It appears that PJ’s family found what they were looking for when they decided to create a product that was good for their family. They found out, like other people all over the world, that Goat Milk Stuff is good for everyone else, too!
