I house sat for a couple of months in the Castro this summer. This weekend, I was back at my old favorite café on Church Street. As usual, three homeless people that lived in the area were making their rounds and having their daily cup of coffee.
It was interesting to hear from the local homeless about how things had changed in the past week since Sit/Lie. All three of these homeless residents informed me that lots of their fellow homeless residents were clearing out and leaving SF. When prompted about why they were leaving, the men told me it was to let things cool down.
When asked if they felt intimidated by the general public, one man told me that everyone is so upset towards homeless people because of the tension created by the Sit/Lie vote that many homeless people feel afraid. He said that he worries about someone attacking them unprovoked or other friends he knows being the victims of hate crimes.
In the meantime, one of the homeless men said that private property is still a safe place to sit and lie in the Castro and that it is public property that you need to be worried about.
