Here is the synopsis:
FOUR LIONS, the feature film debut of renowned British satirist Chris Morris, tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging (and entirely plausible) farce. In a storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, FOUR LIONS is a comic tour-de-force; it shows that while terrorism is about ideology, it can also be about idiots.
Based on three years of research and meetings with everyone from imams to ex-mujahedeen, not to mention a wealth of surveillance material from major trials, FOUR LIONS plunges beyond seeing these young men as unfathomably alien or evil. Instead, it portrays them as human beings, who, as we all know, are innately ridiculous.
According to the director Morris, “Where’s the joke in terror? As Four Lions will demonstrate, it’s staring you right in the face. At training camps young jihadis argue about honey, shoot each other’s feet off, chase snakes and get thrown out for smoking… Terrorist mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohamed spends two hours looking for a costume that won’t make him look fat on camera.”
Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong have written together for over a decade. The duo’s film writing includes contributions to Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno and Magicians directed by Andrew O’Conner. As a solo project Jesse Armstrong won critical acclaim for for his work on the screenplay for In the Loop directed by Armando Iannucci.
