The rise in intolerance towards Bible believing Christians in America has become a stark reality. Polling data shows that a majority of Americans still claim to be Christians, but the evidence in our society causes one to wonder if that data is accurate.
A Battle for the Mind.
Since the early 1960’s, America as been at war with itself. The Christian principles that had governed our society for almost 400 years were being challenged. We are just now beginning to see the effects of 50 years of indoctrination into the humanist philosophy through the education system. “There are no absolutes,” an absolute itself, became the mantra of the liberal elitists. Starting in the colleges in the sixties, then quickly moving down through the grade levels in the seventies. By the 1980’s the transformation from education to indoctrination was complete.
Entering the second decade of the 21st century, we find that our society now embraces a hybrid set of humanist/christian values. Those children that have for their entire lives been indoctrinated into the humanist philosophy have now grown up. Even though they declare a belief in God, the fundamentalist Christian doctrine that salvation is found only through Christ Jesus is unpalatable to them. Therefore, this hybrid philosophies “truth” will only allow that Jesus is “one way” of many to find peace/salvation/enlightenment. Biblical Christianity’s claim of knowing the truth, and that truth being the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, goes directly against this humanist/christian philosophy. Indeed, even within the ranks of the modern church, some people no longer cling to the scriptures as inspired by God.
For the longest time, liberals claimed that all they wanted was a free exchange of ideas. But as the humanist world view has begun to gain in popularity, their position has changed. On the one hand, they have extended the hand of tolerance to just about everyone else. While on the other hand, the liberal elitists have decided that the Christian world view will no longer be tolerated at all. It has become the mission of increasingly vocal groups of Atheists, Humanists, Pantheists and others to push Christianity completely out of the public square. The hate that these so called tolerant people can spew forth at Christians is truly amazing.
Jesus warned His disciples that the world would hate them.
“If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you do not belong to the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you. Remember what I told you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too. But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.” John 15:18-21 (Netfree)
The Truth, Plainly Spoken.
In September, 2000, Jody McLoud, principal of Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee read a statement over the PA system at a football game. The reason for reading the statement was to inform the crowd that it was no longer legal for a prayer to spoken at the beginning of the football games.
Mr. McLoud’s statement reads in part…
“As I understand the law at this time, I can use this public facility to approve of sexual perversion and call it an alternate lifestyle, and if someone is offended, that’s OK. I can use it to condone sexual promiscuity by dispensing condoms and calling it safe sex. If someone is offended, that’s OK. I can even use this public facility to present the merits of killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control. If someone is offended, no problem. I can designate a school day as earth day and involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth, and call it ecology. I can use literature, videos and presentations in the classroom that depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant and call it enlightenment. However, if anyone uses this facility to honor God and ask Him to bless this event with safety and good sportsmanship, Federal Case Law is violated. This appears to be at best, inconsistent and at worst, diabolical. Apparently, we are to be tolerant of everything and anyone except God and His Commandments.”
A Promise of Hope.
Over 10 years later and the intolerance toward Christians in America has only grown since Mr. McLoud’s speech. For many years, the Christian community in America looked toward Communism as the source that would bring persecution to our shores. Many did not realize that the real threat would come from within our own society. We have come to a point in our culture where being a Bible believing Christian is no longer accepted as normal. Quite the contrary, some now consider anyone who believes that the Bible is the actual Word of God as delusional. But God has not left us without hope.
If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ASV)
