The Iron Man 3 release date was announced on Monday, adding yet another Marvel Comics film to the upcoming schedule in theaters. Apparently one studio can’t handle a release by themselves anymore, as the Iron Man 3 release date was revealed by Disney, Paramount Pictures, and Marvel Studios in a joint press announcement, according to Entertainment Weekly. There hasn’t been an announcement regarding what the third film is going to be about, but it could either stand alone, or be tied into the upcoming film of The Avengers as well.
The Iron Man 3 release date is May 3, 2013, making it the third straight time that the Iron Man franchise has released a film in the beginning of May. The last two films came out in May of 2008 and 2010, and each also found immense success at the box office. The first Iron Man made $318 million in the domestic box office and a total of $585 million in the worldwide box office. Iron Man 2 came out this May, earning $312 million at the domestic box office, but surpassing the first film with a total haul of $621.7 million worldwide. With the films combining for more than $1.2 billion, it was pretty easy to predict a third film would be made.
There are three more movies from the Marvel universe that will come out before Iron Man 3, including a picture bringing many of the characters together called The Avengers. The Avengers has a release date of May 4, 2012, and will have Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and Black Widow as some of the big name characters attached to the picture. Leading up to the release of The Avengers, Thor comes out May 6, 2011 and Captain America comes out on July 22, 2011. These three films will all play into the mythology of some of the most successful Marvel comics, with The Avengers serving as a culmination of them all teaming up.
There is a lot of good news on the horizon for Marvel Comics fans, as well as for Marvel Studios and everyone they are working with. All indications point to them finding a lot of success at the box office over the next three years, making it a really exciting time to be a fan of Marvel. It will be interesting to see how Thor and Captain America do though, because these are two characters that were held back a long time because they couldn’t seem to put a story together that had wide-ranging appeal. The enormous success of Iron Man has made that all possible now.
