On Monday night’s ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’, David Letterman finally showed his true obsession with Jay Leno, so much so that guest ‘NBC Nightly News’ anchor, Brian Williams, was left looking like the bridesmaid and not the bride. In an interview, supposedly with Brian Williams, Letterman spent around three minutes talking about Jay Leno – Jay Leno’s show, the way he talks, the types of questions he asks guests and Jay Leno’s “400 cars”. Poor Brian Williams tried to change the subject several times, only to finally be forced to mouth to the camera, “Help me”. But, while the audience laughed, many of us at home were thinking this. Is David Letterman in love with Jay Leno, or does he just want to have sex with him?
Let’s face it, nobody gets obsessed with someone unless they have extreme feelings for the other person. Of course, those extreme feelings can be hate but, often enough, hate is close to love (it’s the flip-side of the coin) and some psychologists say to hate someone to extreme, there’s usually a bit of love there somewhere too.
Watching David Letterman on Monday night, I would first have said he’s head over heels in love with Jay Leno, and wants the white dress, the big cake, the organ music and likely the organ that Jay comes equipped with too.
But then jealousy, reared its ugly head. During his three minutes obsessing over Leno, Letterman told Brian Williams “Stop going on Leno”, after they talked about Williams being a frequent guest of both shows. Letterman also looked positively green when he mentioned Leno’s “400 cars” (a bit of an exaggeration there, it’s about 230 the last time I heard); so maybe he’s a bit irked Jay can afford that many?
The real jealousy David Letterman exhibits though is deep-rooted, long-lasting and a lot deeper than Leno’s “400 cars”. It all stems from his belief he would be given Johnny Carson’s crown, when Carson retired from NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in 1992. Unfortunately for Letterman, Carson obviously thought Jay Leno was the more talented of the two and the crown passed to him. And Letterman has never forgotten it.
So, if you’re wondering if David Letterman is in love with Jay Leno or just wants to have sex with him, unfortunately there’s nothing that romantic here. Letterman’s obsession is nothing more than the old green-eyed monster raising its head (and not the one-eyed monster, some of us thought it might be), over an event that happened almost 20 years ago.
Really, David. Grow up. You’re 63 years old and should be better than this. Jay Leno certainly is.
