Is Lady Gaga the new Queen of Pop? That’s an interesting question, and depending on who you ask, depends on whether you’d get a Yes or No. I remember first hearing about Lady Gaga in the summer of 2008 when I heard her song, ‘Just Dance’ and of course when blogger Perez Hilton posted some of her music on his website, his readers went crazy, wondering who this unknown singer was. Lady Gaga, real name Stefani Angelina Germanotta, first started performing in New York City in 2003. Like most artist, her career got off to a slow start before it eventually took off.
She got her big break in the music industry when she became a songwriter, writing songs for celebrities like Britney Spears and The Pussycat Dolls. Still no one knew who Lady Gaga was. In August 2008, she released her first studio album, ‘The Fame’. ‘The Fame’ became an instant success and hit number one in the UK and Canada and debuted at number two in the U.S. She would eventually release four singles off ‘The Fame’ – all which became radio friendly songs. She then released ‘The Fame Monster’ in late 2009, which was even more of a success than her first album. Suddenly it was Lady Gaga madness, she was everywhere! Her weird outfits and outrageous onstage behavior during her performances seemed to be what set her apart from other pop musicians like Britney Spears or Katy Perry (even though, in some ways, she and Britney are still constantly compared).
These days everything Lady Gaga touches goes to #1. She’s sold more than 15 million records worldwide. She is reportedly worth $50 million, and she’s currently on her second tour, ‘The Monster Ball Tour’. Singer/songwriter Akon recently told VIBE, “I was set to do Britney [Spears] and Christina …I had them both on the calendar, but I ended up canceling all of that because I didn’t want outside things to interfere with what Gaga has going on.” So he canceled his upcoming sessions with Christina and Britney… for Lady Gaga? Interesting…
Lady Gaga still has a lot to prove as to whether she’s the new Queen of Pop. While she’s had many accomplishments, Forbes Magazine even named her the second most powerful musician in the world; I think it’s still too early to name her the Queen of Pop.
