When I moved to the United States years ago, one thing I thought I knew about America was its separation of church and state. Within just a few months however, I realized separation of church and state doesn’t exist in America. It never did. In 2010, this fact is even more at the forefront, with one of the biggest news stories this year being if President Obama is a Muslim. Regardless that President Obama is Christian, apparently one in five Americans still think he’s Muslim. But, even if President Obama was Muslim (which he’s not – for the 1 in 5 idiot Americans who still think he is), why would it matter? In a country that supposedly has ‘separation of church and state’, why should a president’s religion have anything to do with his ability to govern America?
President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii (not in Indonesia, as the same ignorant 1 in 5 Americans insist on believing) to a Christian mother and a Muslim-born father who, by the time of Obama’s birth, was an Atheist. Obama’s parents separated two years later and divorced when President Obama was three. Obama’s mother remarried, to an Indonesian man, and when all Indonesians were called back to Indonesia after a military coup, Obama and his mother moved to Indonesia, where they lived until Obama was ten. During his time in Indonesia, Obama attended both a Muslim and a Christian school. He returned to America in 1971 and lived with his Christian grandparents until he graduated from high school.
That 1 in 5 Americans think President Obama is Muslim is beyond stupidity and ignorance. But, what’s even more troubling is why is it important and why do they care? In a country that supposedly has separation of church and state, that a president is Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist should have absolutely no bearing on whether he was voted into office and if he can govern. So why is a large percentage of America making President Obama’s religion an issue? Now that has an easy answer. Racism. Plain and simple.
In America in 2010, it’s completely unacceptable to say anything racist. So, while most of these 1 in 5 Americans would love to talk about Obama being “black” and why “blacks aren’t smart enough to be president” , because that’s what they really think, they know that type of racism would be looked down on and reflect badly on them.
So, if you can’t be racist and use the ‘scary black man’ argument, what can you still use in America that a large percentage of people will jump on the bandwagon of? Simple. Religion. And, while using religion as a reason a president shouldn’t be president wasn’t even acceptable 50 years ago (ask JFK, Catholic president), in 2010, it is now. And the reason for that? 9/11.
In a post 9/11 world, while you still can’t come out and say all Muslims are terrorists, what you can do is use the word “Muslim” as the new American hate term. It’s acceptable by a huge percentage of Americans who, no matter what they will say in public, truly believe being “Muslim” is just another word for “Terrorist”, and it covers up your true meaning – “President Obama is black. He’s a scary black man and we all know black men are rapists and murderers, so he shouldn’t be president”.
And that’s what you really mean.
What’s fascinating though is these 1 in 5 Americans really aren’t fooling anyone. Others, who agree with them, know what the real meaning of ‘President Obama is a Muslim’ is, and those of us who disagree with you also understand your true intentions.
So, if you must spread lies, deceit and hatred about someone who, as a president elected by the majority of Americans, deserves some respect simply because of the office, then at least have the balls to admit why you’re doing it.
You’re a narrow-minded, racist bigot who would rather have the white president you had before. A president who was uneducated and ill-informed, who dragged America into two wars it can’t win, put the country in its worst depression in 80 years and lied, lied, lied to all of you. But, simply because of his skin color, you would take him over a president who got there by hard work and intelligence – a man, who as much as I disagree with much of what he does – has more integrity in his little finger than George Bush had in his whole family.
Now, I’m not even a fan of America but I do hope the non-racist element in the country, which I still believe is the majority of Americans, wins out at the end of the day. As if the ignorant, racist, bigoted faction of Americans hiding behind their “Christianity”and “President Obama is Muslim” charge, wins the day, then America is a country that’s lost.
And to those of you who say you’re not racist then, when the question “Is President Obama a Muslim?” is asked. The answer should be, not “Yes” or “No” but……… “Why does it matter?”
