If anyone is used to reading my technology articles, the above title might strike those readers as a little odd. I am not a “no questions asked iPad-o-phile” to say the least but, credit where credit is due, if it wasn’t for the iPad, there is a whole lot of writing that I would not have had the pleasure of taking part in. Apple and its iPad tablet PC is one of my favorite targets for criticism and reproach due to its implied “elitism” and New York socialite appeal. If the iPad and Apple did not exist, whom would I poke at then?
The iPad, just like the iPod and the iPhone, have been market icebreakers. IPad was the first one to whet the market’s appetite and these products have had a measurable role in the development of consumer technology. They have caused the birth of many companies and business models by creating a target to go after; namely, theirs. Not to mention the hordes of technology reviewers (like yours truly) that have earned a few dollars by either praising or poking at them.
As popular as the iPod is and, in spite of the fact that “iPod” is fast becoming the term used to describe MP3 Players, most of the mobile music that we hear is listened to on non-Apple units. Similarly, the majority of the smartphones on the market are not iPhones in spite of the fact that the market was embryonic prior to its splashy launch. I have been here the whole time with comparative reviews of “this smartphone” and “that smartphone” against the iPhone-or the best MP3 Player alternative to the, well, you get the idea.
The iPad is Special Though
I have longed for computers to begin to resemble the visions of the future that tantalize us all. The tablet PC existed long before the iPad, but never managed to get in gear. Then, suddenly, the tablet PC is as popular and as chic as the cellphone. Now there are a boatload of potential competitors in the tablet PC kingdom and their numbers continue to grow while I am right there reviewing, comparing, and opining the whole time.
The added bonus is that the tablet PC that I am waiting for-Android, big screen, 4g, etc., is evolving faster than a fruit fly. The best part is that I am earning the precious dollars that I will need to buy the one I love, by writing about the iPad. You can be sure of one thing, though… The tablet PC I buy will not be an iPad.
Not that the iPad is not a nice toy, because it is. Many a Christmas stocking will be stuffed with one Christmas 2010; well, in the wealthier neighborhoods anyway. I hope that my stocking will be stuffed with that perfect, Android OS tablet that I am earning right now. The iPad changed my life because I have the perfect elitist “I am better than you” device to pit against Android, and I make a lot of writing money from it. Thank you Apple!
