It seems that every city and many residents are struggling financially in the state of Michigan and Ferndale is no different. Ferndale wants to be known as “Friendly” in hopes of attracting new residents and businesses to their city which will help generate revenue and create a thriving community.
However, if you go to the city data.com website and view the wide variety of facts and statistics on the city of Ferndale you can easily see what a rough year 2009 was. There were less robberies, burglaries, thief, and cars stolen than in previous years but there were more rapes, assaults and arson committed in the city of Ferndale.
The city data website also shows that “0” single-family new house permits were issued in 2009 and the most was in 2002 with 24 buildings. Even if only “1” new house permit was issued in 2010 it would be an improvement.
Unemployment is still at an all time high at 13.3% but it is slightly lower than the state’s overall unemployment at 13.7%. It’s not surprising that home sales are up from 2009 according to the graph on city data.com but since 2009 was terrible for home sales it would not take much to beat it and the values of the homes decreased making them a great deal. Also the average household income has decreased which means that many Ferndale residents are on a tighter budget.
If Ferndale really wants to create a “friendly” community and live up to the “Good Neighbors” motto they are going to have to step things up a bit, create a safer environment and explore new options for enticing residents and businesses to their community.
