The suffering of 14 million from one of the worst floods in Pakistan seems to evoke a rather lukewarm response in terms of aid from across the world. The dimensions of calamity have been aired enough; but either the outside world do not know where to begin or how to get their act together, as the people suffer, hoping against hope. The aid is trickling in, but hardly makes a dent to the dimension of the disaster. Many feel the image problem of Pakistan has dimmed the energy levels to marshal the required resources & response.
The sad fact cannot be wished away. Many are just tired of the mindless acts of terrorism everywhere that supposedly originates in Pakistan with the government defending with their response that they have done enough. They are also in a state of denial, and do not bell all the cats! Whatever the reasons for lethargy all around, the situation at ground zero are pathetic with, as usual, the poorest of the poor left to their own misery. The sight of them, with babies in arms, will melt the hearts of any, but again unless there is self-help from their own government evident, others can do only so much!
The babies bawl away as that is the only way they can get attention! Likewise, we see even adults flailing their arms in despair, seeking attention. Having had barely roofs over their heads, their physical possessions were next to nothing anyway, but with the hunger of children & the very basic protection from the elements also lost; lives have lost all their meanings & hopes. Whatever the reasons, the world is not able to unite when part of humanity is in distress. The rest seems more attuned to the daily mundane with GDP growth, money supply etc., when millions are barely able to keep their heads above water, literally!
Does it bode well for the future? Yes, much more can be done at grass roots level than turning a blind eye to terror outfits operating freely, but in what way can the ordinary man in the street be held responsible, when they have no say in the way they are governed, despite the talks of democratic government in place? Obviously, the innocents are punished for the ills of the privileged that hold-on to power, come what may!
It is time the world sorted-out the issues for the tepid response, not to forget the real human faces behind the numbers that run into millions. Despite the march of science, we can never prevent the natural disasters, with casualties bound to increase with millions stacked-up in cities. The basic efforts should be activated from across the world than baulk at political ideologies. The poor have no voices in deciding their fate in most countries & are used as pawns even in the so-called democracies among them; they are left to choose from the few, who are all equally bad, anyway!
The world has failed the desperate in these times of life & death. The evil that hold sway are hardly affected; in fact, they wait to fish in troubled waters to further their agendas. We are still grappling with the basics when it comes to human interaction, overwhelmed by petty issues & left impotent to respond. We have a long way to go in treating all as equals, worthy of redemption & succor. Our resolve is tested every now & then, but we are found wanting, most times! The response varies depending on background of the victims!
