Wim Delvoye, a vegan activist, has recently decided to go on a controversial conquest against the sale and consumption of meat. How did he go about it? He inked his way into mainstream society. The disturbing part is that he didn’t tattoo consenting adult humans but rather innocent pigs that likely suffered horribly. As a passionate animal rights activist and a pet pig owner, I find this abominable! To begin, I have learned from experience that pigs can’t handle anesthesia, so surgical procedures are hardly ever done on pigs unless in a dire situation. They are always given a specific anesthesia that is inhaled, but even then, the side affects are great and can lead to great risks for the pig.
Belgian artist Wim Delvoye launched an Art Farm Pigs Growth Fund whereby people can invest in his swine farm outside Beijing in China. Established in 2005, over 10 pigs live and breed here under their tattooed masquerades. Interested parties are even encouraged to buy these pigs. He started with pig hides in 2004. By 2007, he was tattooing live, sedated pigs. He enjoys how the pigs grow fast and thus, the tattoos distort and mutate over time. You can see much of his art here.
Delvoye has had 80 solo exhibitions since 1989. He has had at least three times that amount of group exhibitions in that time. He is no stranger to shocking people with his art. He has even done provocative X-rays of people in sexual positions. I’m not sure why this artist has an obsession with photographing penises!

This image is in a radiologist’s office. If you look closely, you will see all sorts of naughty things not related to radiology hidden in the glass. Again, long before Delvoye was tattooing helpless pigs, he was photographing some bizarre situations.
Delvoye currently resides in Gand, Belgium. He was born in Wervik in 1965. He enjoys being repulsive, as he puts it, “”I am involved in a way of making art that reorients our understanding of how beauty can be created.” He is best know for his digestive machine that mechanically turns food into feces much like the body does (see images here and here).
One can’t say this man is dull. He has an unquenchable taste for the most controversial, the most gruesome, and the most vulgar types of art. Critical acclaims as well as notary reviews questioning the man’s appreciation for and respecting life have been circulated in the past two decades. Some art pieces simply bring the viewer at a lost for words.
