If you live in a home that is filled with clutter and disarray, perhaps it is time to ask yourself why. Are you hoarding things? Do you hold onto your past? Is your home filled with momentos from 20 years ago?
Living in chaos and disarray may very well come from an inability to give up the past. For some reason you feel a sense of safety surrounded by the clutter around you. After all, as long as you are living in the past, you don’t have to worry about what the future holds.
There is a definite connection between the clutter inside of your home and the clutter inside of your mind. They are a reflection of each other. They feed upon each other.
Wanda has lived with her husband, Rick for the past 23 years. For the first 10 years of their marriage, their home was neat and tidy. Slowly things began to accumulate. They both began to feel overwhelmed by the amount of things they had. Still, it was hard to part with them for some reason.
The clutter affected not only their marriage, but the relationship that they had with family and friends. They became too ashamed to invite company over and lived in utter isolation from the rest of the world.
Wanda wanted to go back to school or get a new job, but always blamed her lack of trying on all of the housework that awaited her. Rick blamed his not fixing up the house on the fact that he could never find his tools. They blamed each other for the mess in their home.
Quite simply, Wanda and Rick were using their messy house as an excuse to keep from doing the things they both needed to do in order to be successful. They also used the mess as a reason to avoid being close to one another.
If you find that you are in a similar situation as Wanda and Rick, there is help for you. You may need to seek counseling. There are also several books that can be helpful in getting rid of the clutter. Just remember that a cluttered home is a reflection of something going on inside of you. Somewhere inside, you need to make a change.
