A man named James Jay Lee has taken hostages at the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Springs, Maryland. The Discovery Channel building has been evacuated, and Lee is demanding to speak with Discovery Channel executives.
James Jay Lee seems to have held a grudge against the Discovery Channel for some years, having published a manifesto that consists of a list of demands on the science- and technology-oriented network. Lee is apparently concerned about global warming, over population, and immigration, and would like for the Discovery Channel to broadcast programming expressing those concerns.
According to the manifesto:
“All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.
“All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict. Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!”
Lee uses the words “filth” and “filthy” to refer to human beings, which he also calls “parasites,” as well as human civilization throughout his manifesto and his other writings. Lee is also a fan of a novel by an author named Daniel Quinn called “Ishmael” about a gorilla who tells a man about what it is like to live in a world where humans exploit natural resources. The book also has a sequel titled “My Ishmael.” Lee has also been inspired by Al Gore’s environmental film “An Inconvenient Truth.”
James Jay Lee conducted a bizarre protest in 2008 outside the Discovery Building in which he handed out thousands of dollars to passersby to write essays on saving the planet and paid homeless people to pad the protest crowd. Lee was arrested and charged at the time for disorderly conduct. Lee is reported to have sold some inherited property to raise the money to fund his protest. He is currently unemployed.
The Discovery Channel broadcasts a number of science- and technology-oriented programing, including “Mythbusters,” in which certain urban myths are tested by a team of motion picture special effects experts.
As of this writing, Lee is reported being in the first floor lobby, holding hostages, wearing an explosive device and carrying weapons. A SWAT team is on the premises. As of this writing, hostage negotiators are on the scene attempting to bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution.
